When I photograph people, and especially in portrait photography, I try to capture the person's soul. And as is known, the eyes are mirrors of human soul. When I was to photograph Michael, we had to search shelter under the roof of the Telemark Canal in the harbor in Skien, due to rain. By the dock lay the old veteran boat "MS Henrik Ibsen" and we asked the skipper this day if we could got on board, something we was allowed to. It formed the framework of this photo session, along with these old buildings, wrought iron bars and roof construction.

Along the way, we talked a little about the associations we received to Mississippi, slave labor and a changing world. Perhaps these thoughts, along with Michael's own life story as a young refugee, recently arrived in Norway, who created this expression. Eyes catches the one who considers and thrives you.
