A sleepless night at Hasseltangen

The story behind this picture above is that I woke up not so long after midnight that night, and was lying to wring me to bed without sleeping. I was so light awake that I could not sleep, so I decided to get up, get dressed and take a camera to go to Hasseltangen at Fevik to see if I could get some pictures of the Store Torungen, outermost in the sea gap outside Arendal.

The lighthouse defines much of the identity of us that cames from Fevik. To me personally who grew up with the sound of the foghorn from this lighthouse, the fog light as signaled to the seafarers where they were. This sound has Torungens friends posted on their website, so by clicking here you can experience this distinctive sound. The lighthouse has inspired many, both artists and photographers, and you will find many great pictures.

But, as I drive down Hammenebakken on my way out of this sleepless night, I can see the northern lights (Aurora polaris) above Arendal, and then the temperature, the adrenaline and the speed rose. And when I got to Hasseltangen there was still northern lights to see, so I got up, but the result was bad. I had to realize that my knowledge about camera settings for night photography was reasonably thin. And with once the northern lights were gone.

The bad result made me determined to take photos until I had learned the settings for night photography. So thought so done. The picture "Torungen, a sleepless night" is at 04:20:10 on 12 April 2010. While the northern light picture was taken at 02:27:50, it took me two hours out in the night cold to get a perfect picture. That made me have a very hard day at work the following day.

But, it's not the end of history. Because I was so disappointed with myself that it took a very long time before I open the map with these file. Actually, it was not until I bought a new printer for the computer that I wanted a colorful image to test this and I printed it on photo paper. By a coincidences one of my tenants came upstairs to pay the rent and got to see the picture and he wondered how much I would have for it? And with that, "Torungen, a sleepless night" became the first image I sold. Later I have sold a couple more of this.

There are certain things I've given up to count, and one of them is how many times I've been here on Hasseltangen on Fevik, and saw the sunrise. Maybe it was because it was easy to get out here when sleep would not be with me anymore, but perhaps mostly because it's incredibly beautiful out there. And, along with the sea, the smell of sea, marshmallows and fog lights out there, which provides a complete experience, nature experience which is an amazing start to the day and a great way to spend the weekend.

I have had as a goal to get the flashlight from the lighthouse, every time I have been at Hasseltangen for a photoshoot of Store Torungen, and here I got it.

Torungen Flashlight

I do not have any number of how many times I have been to Hasseltangen, and sitting out here to shoot the sunrise, the lighthouse and both together.

I had to learn to count seconds inbetween every flash, and when I cound, its 17 seconds between.

My fascination for photography can best be explained by displaying a picture like this. This picture is one hundred percent taken straight from the camera and transferred to this website.

It is completely naked, without any modification or adjustment. I have only added my logo to protect the image.
The picture is taken with my best lens, in fact a bird lens, the Canon EF300mm f / 2.8L IS. The strength of this lens is its brightness, F / 2.8 and that it has a fixed focal length of 300mm. And then, with the proven use of the focus point, I highlight a limited area, the center to the left, where this one flower that stands and stretches towards the light becomes sharply, while the background is blurred.

The detail of the photograph, which in practice surpasses the human eye, as we walk in nature, is what gives me the fascination for photography.

Pink morning at Hasseltangen

We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won’t need to tell anybody it does. Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call attention to their shining they just shine. (Dwight L.Moody)

A colleague commented on my photo portrayal of claiming I have a "lighthouse fetish". And maybe that's something. But, I think maybe it's mostly related to my adherence to the ocean, the sea lantern, the swallows, the bird sounds, the sound of the waves and the silence. But, I can not disregard the fact that the fascination of the color play that plays out at sunrise and downturn is fascinating. I love colors.

Experiencing nature's interaction, the subjects that the sunrise creates in the atmosphere and clouds a plethora of color tunes, which again reflect in the sea surface and create a unique mood and tranquility. This January morning in 2012 it was quiet at Hasseltangen, at Fevik. You see that the ocean has waves, everything is mirrored and far out there stands the Store Torungen and gives its light signals to seafarers. In its lonely majesty, the traffic lights and signals that create peace and quiet show road, either further or safely, to home port.

A blessed morning

It is said that a picture says more than a thousand words. And, this picture is probably such a picture where comments become redundant.

This image will be included in a page I'm working on, which will be called "images for your wall". And, as you probably understand, there will be a collection of images that I think will be able to enrich your existence, decorate the home and give your mind rest by looking at it.

All images can be produced and sold in all formats, plain photo paper, canvas, CAPA, aluminum and PVC, in different sizes, with and without frames. Even I have a great sense of taking a panoramic view, such as 120cm x 40cm / 60cm. And, I thought photographs had to be printed on the medium that makes the subject and the dissemination in the picture come true. Very often, it is common photo paper, but I have good examples that where there are many colors, these are very well presented to CAPA or PVC.

None of my will be sold in more than 25 copies. The price will vary by format, medium and framing. Feel free to contact us for special offers.

I have many thousands of pictures from Fevik and surroundings. Everyone does not fit on a page like this, but as time allows, I will create my own pages for Hasseltangen, Tysåsen and Trollefjell.
